Can Police or Fire Find Your House?

We Cannot Help You If We Cannot Find You

By Ray Stackhouse, Parkesburg Fire Marshall

It is the job of police, fire and emergency medical services to help you in your time of need but, we cannot do that if we cannot find you.

Needless delays in providing the care you or your family require are caused by responders not being able to identity your exact house number when driving down the street.

Whether your house in down a lane, obstructed by vegetation, part of row housing or just completely unidentified how will we know which one is yours?

The answer is simple and affordable; address posting of your house number that is visible from the street.

Single family, row home, apartment or townhouse, everyone has a street address that includes a number. By placing this number, in a contrasting color that is reflective, on your building, mailbox or some other object that is visible to responders from the street could save your life.

There are many different vendors that sell these numbers, some in combination with a reflective sign.  Here's a link to one such vendor.

Most general supply stores also carry some type of reflective numbering system as well; Walmart, Home Depot, ect.

Here are some simple guidelines to assure that your address number is visible:

  • Make sure they are at least 4 inches in height
  • Make sure they are at least 0.5 inches wide
  • Make sure they are reflective
  • Make sure they are water resistant
  • MAKE SURE THEY ARE VISIBLE FROM THE STREET

Stay safe!
