Roses For Area Soccer Star

For the second week in a row the Daily Local News took note of an Octorara region accomplishment in their weekend Roses and Thorns column.

Last week's column gave a shout out to Parkesburg, Atglen and Pomeroy fire companies for their ongoing consolidation conversation.

This week was Matt Smallwood's turn.  Matt, an Octorara grad and a senior on Penn State's nationaly ranked mens soccer team, was recognized for being named captain of the team.

Here's what the Daily Local wrote:

Roses to Matt Smallwood, an Octorara graduate and a three-time first team All-Southern Chester County League selection in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Matt was named captain of Penn State's men's soccer team last week.  As a junior, Matt led last year's Penn State team in minutes played (2,037 across 23 games) and was a key contributor in Penn State's six shutouts. With this honor Matt becomes the first Octorara grad ever to be named captain on any Penn State athletic team. 

Kudos to Matt and the entire Octorara soccer community.

Octorara Alumni Named Captain Of Penn State Soccer Team

Looks like we're going to be reading a lot about Octorara alumni Matt Smallwood this year.

Parkesburg Today wrote about Matt earlier this week being a defensive anchor for Penn State's 18th ranked Men's Soccer Team.

Word today is that Matt has been appointed captain of the soccer team for the 2011 season by his teammates and coaches.

Octorara Grad Anchors Penn State Soccer Team

As the college soccer season rolls into high gear, this press release from the Penn State soccer booster's club about Penn State's 18th ranked mens soccer team including Octorara grad and three time First Team All-Southern Chester County League selection, Matt Smallwood.

Money quote:

The Nittany Lion defense is anchored by veterans Justin Lee (Derwood, Md.), Matt Smallwood (Cochranville, Pa.), Mark Fetrow (West Chester, Pa.), and Brian Forgue (Glenmoore, Pa.). The quarter combined for 77 starts in 2010 while Smallwood led the team in minutes played.
