Local Paper Weighs In On Fire Company Consolidation

In an editorial published today, The Southern Chester County Weekly wrote glowingly about consolidation discussions currently underway between the Parkesburg, Atglen and Pomeroy fire companies.

Money quote:
"That’s why it’s pleasantly unusual to see three companies actually willing to surrender some of their individuality for the safety and health of those they serve."

Cochranville Fireman's Carnival This Weekend

Cochranville Fire Company member Dennis Keenan prepares for this week's fire company carnival.

The annual Cochranville Fireman's Carnival brings old-fashioned family fun to the area. This year, the carnival will run Wednesdays through Saturdays, July 20 to 23 and July 27 to 30, with rides, games, food and live music every night.

The carnival will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday nights and from 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Every night is family night, with discounted prices for rides available by purchasing wristbands in advance online.

"We try to put a family carnival together so parents can come, teenagers can come and young children can come - there's something for all of the family," carnival committee member Dennis Keenan said. "That's the history of the firehouse. The fire company started having carnivals for fundraising in 1946.

Live music is a big part of the carnival. Each evening there will be a different featured band performing. Several of the bands are popular favorites returning to perform again, plus there are some new bands on the schedule this year. Gene Douglas with Country and More and the West Chester Swing Kings are new additions this year that will appear on July 20 and 21, respectively.

The Band and The Coyotes are country music groups that will perform on July 27 and 28, respectively. Returning favorites Chestnut Ridge, Hung Jury, Brian Clayton and the Green River Band, and Summit Hill are returning bands that will be featured on one of the Friday or Saturday nights.

Last-minute plans for theme nights are still in the works, but information will be available on the fire company website as the carnival opening approaches.

In addition to the fun and excitement of the carnival, this year there will be a chance to get an advance look at a piece of structural steel from the World Trade Center. The piece of I-beam that was once part of a floor structure in one of the towers was salvaged from the wreckage. The fire company sent in an application to the New Jersey and New York Port Authority to receive a piece of the metal and was approved.

"The process took almost a year from the time we sent the application in," Keenan said. "When (I) look at it, I get emotional about it. It's something in history that's going to be in Cochranville."

The plans are to remove the rust from the 115-pound piece of girder, add a protective coating, and then make it a part of the memorial that stands outside the firehouse. A formal dedication ceremony will be held in the fall. "If all plans work out, by Sept. 11 we'll have a memorial to the people who lost their lives on 9-11," Keenan said.

Local firms have contributed their time to the preparation of the steel, and other businesses are building additional brickwork onto the memorial to accommodate it. The present memorial recognizes fire chief Wayne Yost, who died in the line of duty in 1999, suffering a heart attack while at the scene of a fire.

All proceeds from the carnival will benefit the Cochranville Fire Company to help cover operating costs. The fire company is an all-volunteer effort supported by members of the community who give their time and risk their lives for their neighbors.

The fire company building is located at 3135 Limestone Road, Cochranville. For more information, readers may visit the website at www.cochranvillefire.com.

Pomeroy and Parkesburg Fire Companies Start Joint EMS Service

This from the Pomeroy Fire Company web site:

On July 1st, 2011 the Pomeroy and Parkesburg Fire Companies started its Joint EMS Staffing. This process is a commitment between the two stations and part of the process of working towards the consolidation which is being put together by the Western Chester County Steering Committee.

The operations are listed below however this decision was to better serve our municipalities and maintain a response by our two organizations.

Our two stations (28-29) have been working in a cooperative effort to address the problem of Emergency Medical Services in the Western Chester County and have been involved in multiple meetings and quorums to go live with a cooperative effort of getting a dual EMS role with our two fire companies.

In combination Pomeroy and Parkesburg EMS agencies provide coverage to six municipalities: Sadsbury Township, East Fallowfield Township, Highland Township, West Sadsbury Township and Parkesburg Borough. We are working aggressively towards a resolution to address the problem of life safety in western Chester County and benefit the Western Chester County Steering Committee at the same time.

It will address problems within our services such as manpower, call volume and the need for the service. This cooperative agreement will allow our manpower to combine and jointly get the idea and approach of what the consolidation will have to offer. Its main purpose is to provide 24/7/365 coverage to our coverage areas.

The two stations will be looking at a six-month commitment of a functional cooperative service agreement between the two stations. The staffing will consist of Monday-Wednesday-Friday at one station and Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday at the other station with every other Sunday being rotated amongst the two. One Ambulance with staffing will be logged on seven days a week responding with two (2) Career FF/EMT’s during the hours of 0600-1800. The assigned ambulance (Career Staff) will respond to all emergencies in each respective stations coverage area as dispatched through CCDES.

The assigned unit, either Pomeroy and/or Parkesburg that is assigned during the daytime hours with Career Staff will remain the primary ambulance with Volunteer Staffing from 1800-0600 hours on their assigned night. With this operating schedule we will be able to provide 24-hour service, seven days a week between the two agencies and maintain a state of readiness with one fully staffed Ambulance.

We want to inform you that the Pomeroy Volunteer Fire Company and Parkesburg Fire Company are committed to providing Emergency Medical Services with the utmost professionalism and service we can provide being one through two stations. Thank you to those who have assisted with this agreement and those who support the process.

Special thanks to Chester County DES for assisting us with moving EMS forward.

Longtime Fire Company Member Honored In Christiana

Bryton Hershey stands beside Christiana's new ambulance
Christiana Community Ambulance held an open house Saturday to house its new ambulance and celebrate 60 years of service by longtime member Brayton Hershey.

Hansen Poole, who has been with the company since 1975, was helped along in his training by Hershey.

"As the ambulance has evolved we're doing more and more patient care," he said during the dedication ceremony. "Equipment is fine, but to have the equipment you also have to have the people."

Before members of the ambulance company pushed the new Ford diesel ambulance into the building to formalize the housing ceremony, they honored Hershey, placing a plaque in the vehicle dedicating it and all future ambulances numbered 5-22 to him.

"As soon as I was 18 years old I joined the fire company. The ambulance was part of the fire company at that time," Hershey said.
