This from this week's edition of the Gap-Parkesburg-Oxford Community Courier:
Not long after school closed for summer vacation, two
days of classes were held at the Octorara Area Intermediate School to
introduce youngsters to theater. The classes reached students in first
through ninth grades, providing an experience to spark in them a love of
the theater.
This is the fourth year for the
Octorara Theater Workshop, lead by Saskia Blaha. The classes are not a
program of the school district, but are an outside, nonprofit effort by
Blaha. Blaha is an Octorara Area High School graduate who went on to
theater training in college.
The classes were
held June 20 and 21, with younger students entering grades one through
five attending a one-day session either Monday or Tuesday on "Creative
Movement." The older students in grades six through nine participated in
two late afternoon sessions focusing on "The Young Actor."
"It's wonderful to see the interest in the arts," said Blaha.
The
theme of creative movement focused on getting the young actors to play
their parts with more than words.
The activities throughout the day's
class stressed expressing yourself on stage through movement.
"(Acting is) not just about standing there doing lines. It's about incorporating your whole body," Blaha said.
