After Graduation

By Magdalena Stuehrmann

Among the seniors that graduated from Octorara Area High School this June was Hannah Joy Gajari.

Hannah was certainly not a student to be forgotten – throughout her high school career, she was not only an excellent student, but was also deeply involved in many school activities, ranging from the musical (Band, Chorus and Chorale) to the international (the Club of International Appreciation and Model United Nations) to the civic and academic (National Honor Society, Heroes, Academic Team, Newspaper Club and the morning announcements team).

Hannah was also involved in throwing for the track team at Octorara and morning Bible study at the school.

Before Hannah leaves this fall to attend college, she has made sure to have an interesting summer. She spent the Fourth of July in Washington, D.C., the highlights of which included a tour of the Capitol building, listening to the Air Force Band play, and watching the fireworks near the Washington Monument.

Hannah also spent some time relaxing this summer, reading and seeing a few movies, having some down-time before starting school again this fall.

Hannah will be attending the University of Pennsylvania this fall, with an intended major in Linguistics. She hopes to continue with her musical interests by joining the Penn Band and possibly singing in a group.

In her time outside of class, Hannah is considering joining a Christian organization and pursuing her talent for reporting by writing for The Daily Pennsylvanian

Hannah would also like to pursue a longtime interest in the Hungarian culture and language by studying abroad in Hungary at some point during her school career.

Her time at school, of course, will not be all fun and games. She hopes to take several difficult classes this year: Spanish, “Understanding Brain Function Through Case Studies”, Music Theory, and a writing seminar on John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Though these courses seem daunting, there is no doubt that Hannah will be able to handle them as easily as she did her high school classes.

Hannah shone at Octorara, earning many awards for her academic, musical and citizenship accomplishments.

Hannah was the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution “Good Citizen” Award, an Excellence in English and a Neil Chippendale Award for Excellence in Social Studies recipient, and the recipient of the Outstanding Vocalist, Outstanding Musician of the Class of 2011 and the Track Sportsmanship awards.

She was also nominated to the All Chester Country Academic Team during her senior year.

Hannah was very involved in music during her high school career; she was involved in District and Region Chorus, was a Section Leader in the school marching band and was the recipient of the “John Phillip Sousa Band Award”, an award which is given to one senior each year for musicianship, dependability, loyalty and cooperation in the band.

Hannah was also a recipient of the Lenfest Scholarship in her junior year, a scholarship designed to provide not only financial assistance to students attending universities, but also counseling and advocacy for the students as they work their way through the arduous college application process. Hannah was one of 25 students to be awarded the scholarship out of applicants from fourteen rural school districts in Pennsylvania.

We all wish Hannah all the best of luck as she sets off for university this fall and hope that she continues to keep her optimistic, positive attitude even in the depths of university homework!
