Parkeburg Fire Company Provides Mill Fire Assistance

Parkesburg's all volunteer fire company assisted Atglen and 5 other fire companies Friday morning to extinguish a two-alarm fire at the Organic Unlimited feed mill on Liberty Street in Atglen.

Here's the Daily Local article:

ATGLEN — Firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire at an organic feed mill Friday morning.

About 10 a.m., firefighters responded to a working fire at one of the grain mills for Organic Unlimited in the 100 block of Liberty Street, according to Atglen Fire Chief William Winters Sr.

"You could see flames coming from the top and side of the mill," Winters said.

No one was injured in the blaze, he said.

Chester County Assistant Fire Marshal John Weer said the fire started while the company was processing grain into pellets for organic animal food.

"The grain powder is run through a heating device to create the pellets and the pellets overheated and caught on fire," Weer said.

Weer said the fire caused roughly $500,000 in damage, partly due to the damage to the processing machine.

The company sells grains and feed mixes for animals including chickens, turkeys, pigs, sheep, goats and cows, according to the company's web site.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 12:40 p.m., according to Winters.

Agencies assisting the Atglen Fire Company were Parkesburg Fire Company, Pomeroy Fire Company, Christiana Fire Company, Gap Fire Company and Cochranville Fire Company.
