Parkesburg Yesterday

Parkesburg’s current train station on Maple Street opened on June 4th, 1906.

The station replaced the old train station on Front Street near Gay Street and the State Street Bridge (dismantled in 2010).

As many as 10 trains pulled by steam-powered locomotives stopped at the station daily.

In the background can be seen the Parkesburg School, the Methodist Church, Wilde’s Funeral Home and a large barn.

All but the barn remain standing today.

More information on the history of the station can be found here and here.

I note one very interesting feature of this picture: the area around the train station is bereft of trees. I know not who planted those trees during the 20th century, but they are to be thanked, as those trees add an elegance, beauty, and a relaxed atmosphere to the Parkesburg train station.
