OHS Student Take Engineering Field Trip

An Engineering Summit sponsored by the Chester CountyEconomic Development Council and organized by Dr. David Rutledge of Octorara High School's guidance office took place last Wednesday.

The field trip was attended by eight Octorara students including Kevin Carr, Zach Cornell, Shawna Fiscus, Kaitlin King, Jeremy Miller, Charlie Pitcher, Andrew Thompson, and Jared Weathers.

The field trip began at Dutchland Incorporated along Route 41 in Sadsbury Township, Lancaster County.  Students engaged in activities which expose them to various engineering concepts.  During the tour students spoke to several engineers and were given an account of the process for a waste water tank project currently in production.    Students saw the software utilized to create the 3D drawings and the 150 pages of documentation full of equations that supported the design.  The visit culminated with a tour of the plant itself.  Students viewed the equipment and the pouring of one wall of the project discussed earlier.

The second half of the day included a tour of the SikorskyGlobal Helicopter plant in Coatesville.  This plant services helicopters belonging to clients from around the world including the Queen of England.  The tour began in the hanger with several helicopters under construction.  A Japanese search and rescue helicopter near completion was viewed during the tour.  Students were exposed to all areas of the facility including the high tech painting bays, upholstery room and wiring.  The tour included videos about the company and the newest technologies followed with break -out sessions with several engineers.  Students were shown current projects and software.  This opportunity allowed students to ask questions about the Sikorsky Company, specific projects, and career information.

Engineering shadowing opportunities are available at Sikorsky Helicopter.  Students interested are encouraged to contact Dr. Rutledge in the High School guidance office.
