Rejected Florida Cash To Fund Town's Train and Bridge Projects

Among the several significant announcements made at last month's borough council meeting was the announcement by Council President Mel Keen and Borough Manager Jim Thomas of two long awaited Parkesburg infrastructure projects being fast tracked in Harrisburg and Washington.

As noted in Parkesburg Today on April 19th, council announced:
  • Amtrak plans a multi-million dollar upgrade to Parkesburg's train station to transform the station into the transportation hub of western Chester County.
  • PennDOT plans to demolish and rebuild West Bridge Street are moving forward with a November 2012 start date.
I wondered at the time who was footing the bill and the source of the money to fund both project's.

Yesterday I found the answer to my question.

Turns out the $2B in federal funding to build a high speed train line across the Sunshine State Florida's newly elected governor turned down earlier this year, will instead be spent to improve train service in the nation's northeast corridor.

Amtrak will invest Florida's rejected $2B in projects to improve tracks and infrastructure  projects to support high speed train travel between DC and New York City and out to Harrisburg and beyond.

PennDOT will apply some of the new found money to demolish and rebuild West Bridge Street.

Here are a couple of articles describing the flow of money from Florida into 90 plus different transportation infrastructure projects in the northeast United States:

Philadelphia Inquirer

Huffington Post

West Bridge Street is the second bridge seen early in the above video and then again at the 4:20 and 7:50 marks.

Florida's loss is our gain, thank you short-sighted politican! Always enjoy reading your blog. It's the only way to find out what's going on in the community, thank you Mr. Knickerbocker.
