Future of Main Street Plaza Uncertain

The future of the boarded-up shopping center at the west end of Main Street remains as uncertain today as it was four years ago when the District Court, the center's last tenant, moved to First Avenue nearly 5 years ago.

Purchased by Alliance Environmental of West Chester in 2005 with the intent of building senior apartments including a new library, the site is a sad reminder of a forgone era of prosperity and local shopping options for Parkesburg's north side residents.

Buyers continue to evaluate the property for commercial, residential and even church developments on a regular basis.  The downturn in the economy and the reluctance by most banks to lend money for projects like this have made selling the plaza all the more challenging.

On the plus side, the property's proximity to points east and west via Amtrak and plans to restore the West Street Bridge (finally!) as early as 2012 are positive features the property offers developers.

Lets hope the thawing business climate and a new bridge to Parkesburg's south side give new life to one of Parkesburg most storied properties.
