After Graduation - Abigail Butler

By Magdalena Stuehrmann

Among the numerous and talented seniors who graduated from the Octorara Area High School last month was Abigail Butler.

Ms. Butler, who graduated in the top academic 20 of her class, has been accepted at Arcadia University, where, this fall, she has been given several interesting opportunities.

Ms. Butler, a Distinguished Scholarship recipient, has an intended major in French, which will require her to spend at least 2 semesters studying abroad in France, to which she looks forward to greatly.

She was awarded the Excellence in Foreign Languages award at Octorara, as the first recipient of the award to receive it for excellence in both French and Spanish.

Ms. Butler has an opportunity this fall to study abroad at the University of Stirling, in Stirling, Scotland, a country well known for rainy weather, bagpipes, kilts, and, of course, that infamous dish – haggis.

We wish Ms. Butler the best of luck as she embarks on this exciting journey

Nice young lady. I wonder, though, how marketable is a college major in French? She also won the excellence award in Spanish during high school. Spanish seems like it would be a much more marketable college major. In these tough economic times, a French major just doesn't seem like a prudent major.

I have to agree, but once whe gets to college, she will be able to look at other options. Maybe if she broadens the interest into studying International Affairs or something along that line. Most have to alter their ideas once they get there. The best languages to major in at this time are Asian. Chinese, Korean, Japanese. Arabic could also be marketable. I'm sure she will be fine. She's a bright young lady!

French is spoken by 70 million people in 30 countries. It is spoken in Canada, which is the United States' biggest trading partner.

Learning another language is one of the most marketable skills coming out of college. Arcadia has very well respected abroad programs. She will do great!
