Parkesburg Yesterday

Recognize the intersection in this grainy 1968 photograph?

If you do, count yourself as an old timer!

The 30 East and West sign on the right side of the picture give the location of the intersection away as the Route 10 and 30 crossroads where Walmart, Wawa, Verizon and of course Hershey Motors sell their wares.

Imagine getting through that intersection today with only a Stop sign controlling traffic!

It was no better in 1968 when this picture appeared in the Post Ledger.

Just like today, longtime Parkesburg residents can remember countless accidents, fender benders and fatalities where these two busy roads cross.

As much as things change, they remain the same don't they.

Thanks to Gerry Treadway for the newspaper clipping.

Yes, I remember that intersection with the stop sign. Keylor’s Gulf station is on the left and there was a Sunoco station on the left. Either of those gas stations had “attendant service”. You actually waited in the car while a live person pumped your gas, checked your oil and cleaned your windshield. Hershey Motors would soon be on the south east corner – 1972 or around that time. They started out with a small gravel lot and a utility shed for an office. I remember driving by and seeing my brother in-law, Dave Hershey sitting in the utility shed playing cards with Noah Hershey between customers. The route 30 through traffic, with poor visibility resulted in many severe accidents hence the grading on the corner. Roland McClintock, the local towing service, back then and today, responded to MANY accidents there.
